Student Elections
As you might already know, Nazia Iqbal was elected as Equal Opportunities Officer in the recent elections, with over 1000 votes. Sadly, Bryan and Sarah were not as successful.
However, everyone at Stop the War wishes to thank all who supported Another Education is Possible this year! If you wish to be added to the Another Education is Possible mailing list for more information, feedback and news of what is happening now - please email anothereducationispossible@gmail.com
Remember that you can email Stop the War at strathunistopwar@gmail.com
We have not yet properly started up the regular meetings again, although hope to do so this week.
Please also look out for the subgroup - Engineers Against the Arms Trade.

Update and Student Elections
Students win majority support in historic AGM
The vote, which took place in relation to a motion submitted by a group of students to their Union’s General Meeting (AGM) – the student’s highest decision-making body – won with an overwhelming majority of the over 200 students who queued in the union’s corridors and stairs to participate in the event. Such a high student attendance had been unprecedented in any previous AGM, most of which failed in the past 10 years to even reach quorum.
Despite attempts by the Union’s administration to dilute the substance of the motion and have it voted upon by the conservative Student Representative Council (SRC) – who had already rejected a similar popular motion two years earlier given the uncomfortable position it placed the University vis-à-vis its corporate funders – the fervent group of passionate students were successful in galvanising sufficient support amongst their fellows to turn the motion into student policy.
Within weeks of occupying the McCance Building – heart of the University’s administration – the original 60 students involved in the occupation have already gained the support of a sizable number of their fellow students.
ALSO - The Student Association, and many students on campus, have complained that STW members do not go through 'proper democratic channels.' STW in fact did petition the Student Exec time and again, but were not listened to. Our sit-in worked, we also won in the AGM, but we have decided to nominate 3 candidates in this year's student elections - nobody can then complain that we are not 'playing by the rules.'
Vote for Bryan Simspon to be President, Sarah Collins for Deputy President and Nazia Iqbal for Equal Opportunities Officer. Another Education is Possible!
Come along to our meeting with the enginners to discuss BAE systems on Wednesday 25th February at 12pm. Venue to be confirmed.
Thanks for everyone's support.

SUCCESS!
After a 24 hour occupation of Registry, three negotiation sessions with the university authorities and a students' association that opposed the actions, we managed to win a series of promises from the University administration:
- The Eden Springs contract has been CANCELLED
- Scholarships will be provided for 1-3 (and potentially more) Palestinian students
- The DEC appeal will be publicised on campus and on the University homepage
- The University will re-establish its link with the University of Gaza
- The University denies that it has any links with BAE systems beyond the company funding one student to the sum of £5000 in the engineering department. Whether this is true or not remains to be seen, and we shall investigate this further.
Thank you to everyone for your support in the campaign and the solidarity you expressed. End the occupation - free Palestine!

Strathclyde STW in occupation!!!
Following the rally and demo at 2pm today, we are currently occupying the registry hall in McCance Building. There are 60 people sitting-in in the university's administrative building. The group includes members of Action Palestine, the Libyan Society and Sumsa, as well as individuals. There is also a growing number of people supporting our demands, from outside the McCance building. This includes members of Glasgow university stop the war group. We currently have five delegates in discussion with the Principal of the university.
Please check back here for an update.

Our Demands
MEETING OUTSIDE UNION ON WEDNESDAY 4TH FEBRUARY 2009 AT 2PM
With Strathclyde Stop the War's current focus on Gaza, we have six demands to make of the university.
1) Cancel the contract with Eden Springs. Eden Springs is the water company based in the disputed area of the Golan Heights in Syria, whose profits go back to Israel.
2) Refuse BAE funding and invesigate alternative sources of funding for the Engineering Department.
3) Fund and facilitate 50 scholarships for Palestinian students.
4) Solidarity with the Islamic University of Gaza: write a letter of support; twin Strathclyde with the university, and aid in its rebuilding.
5) Condemn the BBC for not showing the DEC appeal; show the appeal in lecture theatres and organise a fundraising day on campus.
6) Oppose Israeli academics who promote military research on campus.
Please help to have these demands met by the university. Meeting outside the Union on Wednesday 4th February 2009 at 2pm. Come along to find out a lot more information about our demands and previous success stories.
Feel free to leave a comment with any questions you may have.

We Fought the Law and We Won! Students and anti-war activists break the ban on Stop the War march.
The demonstration on Monday was a tremendous success and a big victory for our movement. It was attended by at least 5,000 people, a hugely impressive turnout for a weekday.
Coaches came from far and wide and the number of students on the march was particularly impressive. Many colleges brought their biggest delegations since the Febuary 15 2003. Many people have sent e-mails or phoned over the last few days sending support and saying they wished they could attend.
The size and spirit of the march reflected the deep public disgust at the government's continued support for Bush's wars. It also showed the determination of the movement. A feeder march of students from SOAS, Kings, LSE and Scotland were received with cheers as they approached the square, chanting ‘defy the ban, we will march’.
The police's attempt to ban the march, no doubt at the insistence of government ministers, served only to increase the turnout. The scale of the response and the tremendous public stand taken by Tony Benn, Walter Wolfgang, Brian Eno and others made it impossible for the police to stop us on the day. And so a disturbing assault on our civil liberties was overturned and the views of the anti war majority were delivered to parliament.
The Stop the War Coalition would like to thank everyone who managed to attend yesterday, everyone who helped organise and publicise the demonstration and the many hundreds of people from around the country and the world who have e-mailed and phoned their messages of support.
Lets build on this momentum at Strathclyde, come to the next organising meeting, Wednesday 17th october, 2 pm, outside the Student Union.
